Growth through Research, development & demonstration in Offshore Wind

Innovation@work: Dealing with small toads and big loads

Get an impression of the onshore tests for silent offshore wind installation technologies

In this short video, we follow Stas Verichev, showing us around the SIMOX onshore test site. You see tough people, huge piles, mud, technologies, cranes, various installation tools, and much more.

At this site in the Port of Amsterdam, we tested the Sustainable Installation of XXL Monopiles, as part of the SIMOX-project. Monopiles are the predominant choice as the foundation for offshore wind turbines, but the current installation technology – impact-driving – generates a lot of noise. During the onshore test campaign, we measured the pile's behaviour during and after the installation using four installation technologies: impact-driving (as a reference), vibro-driving, Gentle Driving of Piles and Vibrojet®. The tests have been completed successfully and the video gives a nice impression of what it takes to set up an onshore test programme at this scale. Data analysis has started comparing the driveability, lateral bearing capacity and noise data.
