Growth through Research, development & demonstration in Offshore Wind

Follow-up project: HyPE-ST 1.2

Hydraulic Pile Extraction Scale Tests for testing the removal of piles from the soil at the end of their operational life.

The development of the hydraulic dismantling technique for monopiles is continuing. Shortly after completion of the GROW HyPE-ST project, in which the hydraulic extraction concept has been successfully tested, the second phase started in April 2021. The consortium with the GROW partners Deltares, DOT, IHC, RWE, SIF and TNO - in collaboration with Jan de Nul - aims to prove in this HyPE-ST 1.2 project the hydraulic extraction concept on an intermediate scale to demonstrate the technology in a relevant environment.

Through these activities, we will enhance our understanding of pile-soil interaction and demonstrate a proof of concept in representative soil conditions. We will further develop and validate the analytical extraction model - developed and used in the original HyPE-ST project - to predict the required breakout pressures for different configurations.

The work in this project includes preparatory activities and experimental design, laboratory-scale testing, intermediate-scale testing, model validation as well as data analysis and reporting. We will perform the tests at a scale of approximately 1:5, which roughly translates into a test pile diameter of 1.5 m on a monopile with a diameter of 8 m.
