Growth through Research, development & demonstration in Offshore Wind

Innovative shaker technology advances quieter pile installation

A GROW project is bringing the offshore wind sector a step closer to low-noise monopile installation. The Electric Shaker for Gentle Driving of Piles (eGDP) builds on earlier research into vibration-based piling methods, combining low-frequency vertical motion with high-frequency torsional excitation to install piles more efficiently.

Traditional impact piling is still the dominant method, but it is associated with high underwater noise levels and significant structural loads. By contrast, the eGDP approach aims to reduce both noise emissions and installation stresses, while maintaining penetration speed and soil bearing capacity.

The project focuses on testing and advancing shaker technology that can support the installation of increasingly large monopiles, a key requirement as offshore wind turbines continue to scale up. In doing so, the eGDP project contributes to more sustainable construction practices and may reduce the need for costly noise mitigation measures.
