CLEARWind project launches to pave the way for responsible offshore wind decommissioning
New GROW initiative analyses future-proof methods for full end-of-life removal of offshore wind assets
Heerema Engineering Solutions and GROW have launched the CLEARWind project, which stands for Cost-effective Lifecycle Ending for Asset Removal in offshore WIND. This research project aims to develop robust, efficient, and environmentally responsible strategies for the full decommissioning of offshore wind farms.
As the first generation of European offshore wind farms approaches the end of its operational life, the sector faces a major challenge: by 2040, around 1,000 turbines will need to be removed, rising to 6,000 by 2050. CLEARWind addresses the growing need for clear methodologies, realistic cost insights and coordinated planning for the systematic removal of turbines and foundations.
The project delivers a comprehensive overview covering technical, regulatory, logistical and economic aspects. It will analyse removal techniques for monopiles and turbines, review onshore dismantling and recycling requirements, and translate representative decommissioning scenarios into detailed activity schedules and cost–benefit assessments. The work is developed through close collaboration with regulators, developers and industry experts.
Ultimately, CLEARWind will provide a structured knowledge base and a roadmap to support efficient and responsible large scale offshore wind decommissioning in the Greater North Sea region.
